"God Shed His Grace on Thee"

The famous phrase displays a grammatical ambiguity.  Is it simply telling us something that happened?  Or is it rather a subjunctive prayer, a wish directed at God with the "may" understood?

It's the latter.  How do we know this?  Because of what comes after, in the same sentence.  "And crown thy good," not "And crowned thy good."
